More about

The project

The city of Chiatura, located in a mountainous valley on the banks of the Kvirila river in Georgia, experienced strong economic growth due to the mining industry in the 1950s. The city chose POMA to retrofit its overhead transport system as part of its urban development plan and also to enhance its identity.

At the peak of its activity, Chiatura had about a hundred small ropeways throughout the valley that could transport both the manganese mine workers and the ore, but also allowed the population to travel to the various districts of the city.

Out of the 100 or so industrial and urban ropeways, 24 were exclusively for passenger transport and only eight are still in operation, with four being replaced by POMA.

These four urban ropeway lines (Sanatorium, Lezhubani, Naguti, Mukhadze) connect the city centre to the outskirts, at a speed of 6 m/s. Each cabin is designed to carry up to 15 passengers with the intention of making this the main means of transport for the local population. More than 10,000 people a day are expected to use the ropeway.

The city, which is becoming more aware of its potential as a tourist destination, also hopes its visitors will experience a really enjoyable excursion over the city.

A new urban ropeway range has been developed for this project, the main purpose of which is to cover short distances with only a few towers.

A restrictive
urban environment

The teams on site had to be resourceful when installing the towers and when rolling out the tensioned ropes over homes, electric lines, railway tracks, roads and rivers.

ultra-modern
stations

The urban ropeway line retrofit project also involved a very distinctive station design. All the architectural work was conducted by Georgian Architects and all the stations are typically Georgian in style. A far cry from the image of the old dilapidated ropeways, the stations are futuristic, unstructured and very colourful.

Chiatura,
the City of Ropeways

Chiatura, a small mining city, was a pioneer in urban ropeway transportation. It was home to the first-ever passenger ropeway in the USSR and boasted the largest ratio of ropeway transportation lines per inhabitant. These ropeways, mostly now abandoned, also attract many tourists to this city in Georgia.

Urban ropeways of Chiatura

They talk about it

Chiatura is a small mining town in Georgia, where the entire economy has been built around manganese extraction for over a century. The city is built at the bottom of a steep valley, and residential quarters stretch out over the foothills.

The 4 gondola lifts produced by POMA all make it possible to reach outlying residential areas from the city center and replace mono-way bi-cable devices, that is to say with a single cabin in back and forth on a carrier cable, equipped with cabins from another age, when Chiatura was the laboratory of Soviet aerial cable transport.

The 4 cable car produced come from a new range of products, between cable car and gondola, simple and efficient configured around the components of our ecosystem: tubular pylons and “standard single-cable” line equipment (pylons, gangways, jib cranes) and cabins DIAMOND 15 seats equipped with communication with the control post, and night lighting.
