Giant Wheel

With its 60-metre diameter, the London Eye was the first panoramic wheel – known as the “Big Wheel” – for which POMA designed, produced, and installed ovoid capsules made to measure. The Las Vegas High Roller, the Shenzhen Ferris Wheel and the Dubai Wheel have cemented POMA’s place in this specific market.

 

Innovative capsules

The rotating capsules designed by architect David Marks turn on themselves through an ad-hoc POMA system, in order to maintain horizontal stability regardless of the wheel movement. Made of high-quality curved optical-quality laminated glass, which is exclusive POMA technology, and attached to the outside of the wheel structure, they offer an ideal panoramic view.

The project

In France's aeronautical capital, an overhead mobility solution is right at home!

Téléo is part of the city's public transport network, covering almost 3 kilometres in 10 minutes to connect Rangueil Hospital, the Oncopole and Paul Sabatier University, all major hubs of activity in Toulouse employing 85,000 people.

Eagerly awaited by its 8,000 daily users, it eases traffic in the south of the city, in connection with three metro train lines.

Ropeway transportation was selected because it is the most appropriate solution for adapting perfectly to the terrain of the line—the ropeway crosses the Garonne river and travels over Pech David hill—and “detachable 3S” POMA technology was chosen for its excellent capacity to withstand the wind and its minimal requirements for ground space.

Longest

urban aerial ropeway

in France

With its 3-kilometre line between the Oncopole and Paul Sabatier University—two of the city’s main areas of activity—Téléo is the longest urban ropeway in France

Multimodal

Téléo connects to the existing metro and bus lines in the south of the agglomeration and interlaces with the public transport network. Its transport capacity is capable of growing according to the needs of the inhabitants of Toulouse, by adding new carriers to reach a capacity of 2000 pphpd.

Sustainable

transport

The carbon footprint of ropeway transportation is very low (30 times less than for cars), by virtue of its lightweight infrastructure combined with 100% electric motorisation and energy options. Téléo is a model of decarbonised eco-mobility.

Comfort

and Design

Pininfarina, the famous designer for Ferrari, created the look for Toulouse’s “Urban Symphony” cabins. Onboard the Symphony you can find optimum comfort for 34 passengers, who will appreciate the peace and quiet as well as the breath-taking view of the Pyrenees!

Accessibility

The passenger route has been optimised to ensure accessibility for all passengers and the interior layout of the cabins was submitted to and approved by the association CARUT, a representative body of urban transport users with disabilities.

Moreover, with their wide openings and the carriers stopping in the stations, boarding is easier for everyone, including passengers with equipment (wheelchairs, pushchairs, bicycles, etc.).

Reduced ground requirements

3S technology has a remarkable advantage in urban environments: its limited requirement for land and its visual impact. Stations can be off the ground and very compact, and only a small number of towers are installed. Despite being 3 kilometres long, the ropeway in Toulouse requires only five towers.

The project

The gondola lift in Saint Denis on Réunion Island is 2.68 kilometres long and links Le Chaudron, located to the east of the town centre, to Bois de Nèfles in the north of the town, via Le Moufia.

A 14-minute trip including 3 middle stations. The 46 carriers with 10 seats ensure a capacity of 1200 people per hour and per direction.

Perfectly integrated into the existing public transport network, the first urban gondola lift of Réunion Island is designed to enhance the flow of traffic, which is particularly heavy on the island, and to encourage soft mobility.

It also helps to create new dynamics, with the new college in Bois de Nèfles and numerous local shops around the line.

1st urban gondola lift in the Indian Ocean

The gondola lift supports the economic and urban development of Saint Denis by limiting impacts at ground level and preserving available space. Each station is a lively place with hubs and cultural or economic activities.

 

A project shared with the local community

Led by a team of complementary experts with shared experience and strong local ties, the project was developed with full consultation of the local community and elected representatives. During the public consultations, the community really got on board with the plan for the ropeway: some 85% of respondents said the project was useful, and 75% said they would take the ropeway to go to work and for leisure activities.

Team training

 

The gondola lift on Réunion Island benefits from a POMA skills transfer programme to ensure the maintenance and safety of the installations and to generate local jobs.

 

A tourist lift

Réunion Island, “the intense island”, is a unique territory where mountains meet the sea and which has magnificent landscapes where nature is extraordinary: endemic forests, active volcanoes, hikes in isolated spots, lagoons, ramparts, etc. listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. While this project is a strong link in the urban mobility of Saint Denis, it is also a major tourist attraction for the region.
