More about

The project

The gondola lift in Saint Denis on Réunion Island is 2.68 kilometres long and links Le Chaudron, located to the east of the town centre, to Bois de Nèfles in the north of the town, via Le Moufia.

A 14-minute trip including 3 middle stations. The 46 carriers with 10 seats ensure a capacity of 1200 people per hour and per direction.

Perfectly integrated into the existing public transport network, the first urban gondola lift of Réunion Island is designed to enhance the flow of traffic, which is particularly heavy on the island, and to encourage soft mobility.

It also helps to create new dynamics, with the new college in Bois de Nèfles and numerous local shops around the line.

1st urban gondola lift in the Indian Ocean

The gondola lift supports the economic and urban development of Saint Denis by limiting impacts at ground level and preserving available space. Each station is a lively place with hubs and cultural or economic activities.

A project shared with the local community

Led by a team of complementary experts with shared experience and strong local ties, the project was developed with full consultation of the local community and elected representatives. During the public consultations, the community really got on board with the plan for the ropeway: some 85% of respondents said the project was useful, and 75% said they would take the ropeway to go to work and for leisure activities.

Team training

The gondola lift on Réunion Island benefits from a POMA skills transfer programme to ensure the maintenance and safety of the installations and to generate local jobs.

A tourist lift

Réunion Island, “the intense island”, is a unique territory where mountains meet the sea and which has magnificent landscapes where nature is extraordinary: endemic forests, active volcanoes, hikes in isolated spots, lagoons, ramparts, etc. listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. While this project is a strong link in the urban mobility of Saint Denis, it is also a major tourist attraction for the region.

The project

Located 400 km to the east of Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod is the fifth largest city in Russia and has a population of 1.3 million.

The economic and cultural centre of the vast economic region Volga-Vyatka, Nizhny Novgorod has many industrial satellite cities such as Bor, Kstovo and Dzerzhinsk. The traffic is regularly saturated for those who live in Nizhny and work across the river in Bor. What used to be a two-hour car trip now takes only 12 minutes to cover the 3660 metres that separate the two gondola lift stations and cross the Volga. Each station is connected to the public transport network and has a large car park, promoting intermodality.

Fifty-six spacious cabins run from 7am to 9pm, seven days a week with a capacity of 1000 people per hour per direction, even at the peak of winter, when road traffic is paralysed by the cold and snow.

The first urban gondola lift in Russia

POMA has built the first urban gondola lift in Russia, located in a most demanding environment.

Large crossing capacity

Two large towers over 80 metres high and weighing 170 tonnes support a span of 900 metres, making it the longest in the world for an 8-seater gondola lift.

Technical challenges

The gondola lift has been designed to handle three major constraints: the considerable width of the Volga river from one bank to the other, intense river traffic and the river freezing over every winter, making it impossible to install towers in the river bed. The Volga also swells (by up to more than 11 metres), which can be devastating, so this also had to be taken into consideration.

Multimodal

Each station is connected to the public transport network and has a large car park.

Availability

The system’s dual motorisation and redundancy optimise its availability and ensure cabin recovery in the event of an external incident.

More about

The project

The first gondola lift line connected to the city of Medellín's metro was a successful experiment in mass transport and urban integration. It was the first of five other Metrocable lines in the “proyecto de Ciudad”, the municipality of Medellín's “City project”.

This line, and this project, aimed to open up working class neighbourhoods and recreate a link, improve security and boost the city's appeal.

The gondola lift operates 7 days a week, 19 hours a day and has reduced travel times considerably for this neighbourhood of 150,000 inhabitants that was marginalised due to a lack of accessibility, located on a hill with very little space. Residents of the area are now better integrated into the city and can access its amenities faster.

Line K laid the foundations for a multimodal network in which rope transportation became an irreplaceable solution for serving areas that are difficult to access. The city now has 6 gondola lift lines, which make up more than 18% of the city’s public transport network and carry more than 250,000 passengers a day.

Major social and
economic
benefits

The station environment has transformed with the arrival of shops and a bank, plus the Spain Library in 2010. The inhabitants of the neighbourhood reach the metro in less than 10 minutes instead of the 30- to 90-minute trip by minibus. A single ticket gets them to work or school quickly and easily.

100,000 hrs of operation

In 2019, the first metrocable line celebrated its 100,000 hours of operation, confirming its status as a world-class model of urban mobility.
