More about

The project

Simatai is a section of the Great Wall of China located about 120 km from the centre of Beijing, towards the city of Chengde.

Strategically located in the immediate vicinity of the most famous of the 7 wonders of the world, the Simatai gondola lift makes it easy for thousands of tourists to access the site all year round.

Created in 2013, it replaced an older fixed grip gondola lift dating from the 1980s on a similar route but covering a larger length.

On arrival, a ten-minute walk will take you to the open 5 km section of the Great Wall, which is linked to the Jinshanling section via a long suspended bridge.

The design of the stations has been designed to allow ideal integration. The station is inside buildings where the style and architecture are entirely made of stone, allowing it to blend in with the environment.

Iconic
cabins

The sphere-shaped cabins dubbed “bubbles” created by Denis CREISSELS, and built by POMA, have become the symbol of the city of Grenoble.

Stations

Between Grenoble’s city garden and the banks of the Isère river, the drive station has an ultra-compact design for ideal for fitting into the environment despite the limited space. This configuration also reduced the length of work and earthmoving.

The return station is a “one-steel column” station with a “track sheave” system, which simplifies roller battery adjustments and maintenance operations.

Built in
record time

The aerial ropeway was built in record time, involving 15 people from the engineering office for four months. A great achievement! Especially since the construction of a bicable uni-directional ropeway was a first for POMA, with grouped cabins each held by a fixed grip.

A unique
viewpoint

This natural promontory is one of Grenoble’s most beautiful viewpoints. A 360° panorama from which, in very clear weather, you can distinguish the contours of Mont-Blanc.

Fixed grip

Each cabin is equipped with a fixed grip which facilitates maintenance operations.
